Programmes for school classes

Your trip to the Universum® Bremen of course starts off with a welcome from one of our members of staff. You and your class are given a brief introduction to the content of the exhibition and then it’s time to set off on a discovery tour!

In addition to excursions that you can organise yourself, there is also a wide range of exciting offers for delving further into the exhibition topics. You can choose between “research sessions” in our popular Researchers’ Lab as well as “technology sessions” in our well-equipped Technology Studio. The contents of both forms of learning revolve around the three topic areas of our permanent exhibition: Technology, Humans and Nature.

Research sessions


The research sessions are held in our Researchers’ Lab. With its bright, multifaceted furnishings, the room fuels their imagination, encouraging them to experiment and let their creative juices flow. During the 2.5-hour research sessions, the pupils are given a detailed introduction, a guided tour with a research task and then great tips for experimenting at home.

Violent Nature: Earthquakes and Volcanoes (Years 3-6)

In this research session, the pupils explore the “Violent Nature” exhibition. They learn about the backgrounds and causes of dramatic natural events and find out about the latest scientific research. This knowledge is then developed further at the different stations in our Researcher’s Lab.

Climate Change: Who should do what? A hosted role playing game on dealing with a complicated challenge (Year 7 and above)

The pupils explore the “Networked Nature” section and gain an insight into the latest scientific research findings. They then discuss different statements concerning climate change in teams and adopt different positions.

Senses: The Gateway to our World (Years 3-6)

The pupils test the possibilities and limits of their perception and look at how their senses work together. They then explore the “Senses Obstacle Course” part of the exhibition, making their way through the pitch-black labyrinth using just their sense of touch, for example.

Change of Perspective: Scientific Methods made Tangible! (Years 4-7)

Using the incredibly simple black box method, the pupils are able to follow scientific protocols all on their own, including the formation of hypotheses, discussions and development of models. In the “Body Shapes” area, the pupils then learn about the different shapes they can create with their own bodies.

Senses, Thinking and Learning: How Real is our Reality? (Year 7 and above)

The pupils explore the way the brain works using fascinating illusions and classic tricks of the mind. They then discuss the conclusions they have drawn about the way they think and learn.


Technology sessions


The Technology Studio offers a vast array of options: a wide range of different building systems and everyday materials stimulate skills and creativity. In addition, working together develops the children’s ability to work in a team. There are around 30 places available for those interested in technology.

fischertechnik® Robotics (Years 6-13)

Clever programming brings together the use of wind power and protection for birds! Acting here as an example, a straightforward task involving the nature conservation allows schoolchildren to take their first steps in linking logical modules. They are familiarised with actuators and sensors as well as the IPO principle (Input, Process, Output). The fischertechnik® Robotics programmes have been developed so that both beginners and advanced learners will achieve good results. Prior knowledge of programming is not necessary. The children works in pairs.

fischertechnik® Pneumatics (Years 6-13)

Pupils construct a pneumatic catapult. Pneumatics are used in countless sectors of industry. In this workshop participants learn about the generation of compressed air, pneumatic cylinders and valves based on practical examples. After a brief introduction they then build a pneumatic catapult. The children work in pairs. No prior knowledge is required.

Cardboard. Machines. Construction! (Years 4-7)

Pupils investigate the basic principles of mechanics armed with simple consumable materials. They imagine a figure and a movement. The model is designed on paper, a prototype constructed and then the concept realised. The result at the end of the technology session is machines which are as colourful and diverse as the ideas of the pupils themselves. The children then have time to explore and discover the three topic areas.

“Digital Living” and Me (Year 7 and above)

Is it possible to prevent online mobbing? Are multiplayer games dangerous or not? In the “Digital Living” role playing game, the pupils choose a topic in their teams, discuss it and formulate their own positions. We recommend including a visit to the “Digital World” section on the Technology level of the exhibition.

Dates and times: Supervised research or technology sessions last for approx. 2.5-3 hours and can be booked from Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost (entrance and tutoring) is €10 per pupil. Two accompanying teachers are granted free entry.
